The woman operating border control at Sofia Airport certainly looked striking enough. In her twenties, dark skin - almost Greek-looking, her face caught my attention first. Dyed, red-orange hair and heavily made-up eyes greeted me as I approached the booth. She said nothing as she scanned my passport and I was soon out the other side.

Entering Bulgaria
 
The train from Bucharest was empty. There were four carriages. My carriage had two other people in it. There was an attendant that seemed bored out of his mind. The train was bound eventually for Istanbul, and it turned out that he was a Turk.

I remember how fascinated I was the first time when I visited this small town, snuggled in the mountains...Entering it you forget about the vanity and the noise of the big city. You are welcome by a town, where every building is in the style of the Bulgarian national revival. The signs, the names of the streets, the hotels, and the restaurants look as if they are citations of books of the Old Bulgarian literature.

This is the question I keep asking myself every time I visit this city…But even locals are not sure about the spelling... I have heard that the name comes from the Turkish word for fortress.
