Bulgaria is rich with archaeological finds, which I must say are no inferior to the Pyramids, but these places are still not very popular among general public. I would like to tell you about two of these sites – the ancient Thracian temples at Starosel and Perperikon.

What is common of the two places is the uniqueness of the location and the surrounding nature. Both Starosel and Perperikon are located on top of beautiful hills from where the panoramic view is magnificent. Some say that there is positive energy radiating from these two temples.

The temple near the village of Starosel is not far from the city of Hissar . It is possible to visit both places in one weekend.

In 2000 year the archaeologists discovered the biggest Thracian temple in South-east Europe . According to scientists the temple at Starosel dates back to the 5th century BC and most probably was built by the mighty Thracian king Sitalk. Curious enough is the fact that the hill has always been known by the locals but no one suspected about the temple hidden inside.

Starosel
Today the temple at Starosel is open to general public. There is an asphalt road to the very top of the hill, as well as a large parking lot, souvenir shops and tourist signs. But when we first visited the temple it was just unearthed, there was no road and we had to walk to the top. Besides there was no guide but the keeper who told us what he had heard from the archaeologists. Today the entrance fee is 3 leva.
The temple was built with large stone blocks, which were connected by metal cramps – very innovative technology for its time. The entrance of the temple is 1.60 m wide. At the back of the hill is the so-called winery. Near the temple there is a tomb and a sacrificial altar.
