Page 1 of 4 Spring is wonderful time for tourism. Though in mountains it usually comes later than in plains this year on May 6th the whole forest is already blossoming. We decided to head for the Rhodope mountain and visit the natural phenomenon “Wonderful bridges”, one of the 100 National Tourist Sights in Bulgaria. Coming from the city of Plovdiv you have to follow the road to Pamporovo resort. About 2-3 km after you pass the Hvojna village you have to take the right turn, direction Zaburdo village. Then some 15 km later you’ll reach the Wonderful bridges. The road is narrow and winding but, still, quite acceptable for a passenger vehicle.
![]() The Wonderful bridges were formed by way of erosion. For millions of years water has been carving the marble rocks and eventually it has shaped them into several arches – hence the name “bridges”. The wonderful bridges are located at 1,450 m above sea level and above them is the Golyam Persenk Peak (2091 m). The biggest rock bridge is 96 m in length and 70 m in height. It is about 12-15 m in width. There are many small crevices and caves where birds and bats nest.
The second bridge is 200 m away. It is 50 long and the arch height is 30 m. Nearby is the entrance to the Icy cave. You can only judge about the enormity of these rock formations when you near them. They make you look like a small dwarf.
