Near the southern border of the country, in the Rhodope Mountain, there are five big dams on a comparatively small territory. These are the dams Vacha, Batak, Dospat, Shiroka Polyana and Golyam Beglik. They all compete for the title “most beautiful dam”. But there is no winner.
Coming from Trakia motorway, take the turn to the city of Pazardzhik. After you pass the city of Peshtera you will reach the city of Batak. The route is very picturesque. Cross the city and immediately after the crossing for the dam wall, turn left and start upwards. Driving in the Rhodope Mountain is always an adventure. Sometimes you pass through a tunnel of leaned tree branches, sometimes you keep your fingers crossed not to fall down a precipice and sometimes you pull over the car to make sure you are awake. But when you look at your left you would forget all your worries. You would realize that you have reached the Golyam Beglik dam, which is an absolute harmony of water, forest and sky.
When you face the dam you would see the Rhodope lawns (with their pine trees lined up), you would see the reflection of the sky, smiling at you, and right besides you would see the reflection of yourself.
In winter you can find amazing images on the ice.
